whats the downside of opening a bank account down there?

theres a scotia bank right beside europa and if i use their atm if and only if i am outa cash it doesn;t cost me any thing as that i withdraw it outta my toronto scotia account?

i always thought about just getting an account there and taking down enough for a trip or two with me. any feed back????

the scotia bank in sosua is NOT really connected to OUR scotia bank...they play by DR rules and there is a, large?, fee to withdraw from the ATM.

i would not put any $$$ in a DR bank unless you would be ok with losing it all.

i have Washington Mutual and dont use it anywhere but there or Signature bank which is near my job and doesnt charge fees... I dont use credit or bank/atm cards in DR... I carry Cash!!

Some banks issue them free if you have an account and others charge a fee. Either way it is better than losing some cash.

You usually don't get the same exchange rate as cash but it is only about 1 or 2 Pesos difference, at least that was my experience
