Re: Fine Dining At La Passion's.....Really!

If you're in Sosua and tired of the food, go to Cabarete...there are a handful of restaurants that serve from decent to REALLY good food. Most of the restaurants are a bit pricier than the average Sosua place, but cheap compared to the US. Plus...you're either on a beautiful beach surrounded by beautiful women...most of whom speak English...or in a funky or classy place with a cool vibe...here are a few suggestions:

    on the beach:
    Pomodoro's - excellent pizza..really!
Jose' Oshea's - American style food and lots of TV's, including a huge projection screen- genuine sports bar right on the beach, not cheap, but a cool change of pace!
Lax - good pizza, killer atmosphere and crowd, great drinks
Casanova's - decent food, excellent atmosphere and crowd
Casa del Pescador - great seafood - try the "Surfer's Plate"
Papi's (La Casita) - Camarones or Langostinas a la Papi is one of the best meals you will have...anywhere...seriously.

    off the beach:
    Otra Cosa - World-Class french/caribbean food...but NY level prices
Bliss - Seafood and Steaks...very reasonable for the quality and the atmosphere
    Yamazato - GREAT sushi!
Ali's Surf Camp...great churrasco - full meal for under 300 pesos and cheap drinks
Embocca bar and beach club - Mediterranean food in a setting that beats anything on South Beach
HexenKessel - dirt cheap german food and pizza - open 24 hours

Look on the menu or ask if they include the ITBIS (16%) and Service (10%) in their prices or charge separately...makes a huge difference and most include it but some don't. Also, only a few of these places take credit cards...

    For girls:
Putas and semi's - Bambu and Onno's (starting around 11pm), HexenKessel (during the afternoon and after the bars close)
Non-Putas and Beautiful turistas - Lax, Casanova (before midnight) Onno's after.

    Best drink deals:
All of these places have happy hours, some from 4-8pm with half price drinks and food
Cosita Bar (between Onno's and Bambu) serves drinks for almost half what the other places charge...and you can take the drinks with you...

Cabarete has a completely different scene...and feel from Sosua...plus the bars stay open till 3 am every night...and there's a Casino that's WAY nicer than the one in Sosua...if you spend more than a few days on the North Coast you should check it out, it's only a 10 minute taxi ride away...

I know there has been a lot of negative things said about Jose O'Shays but I love that place. Right on the beach and pretty good food....a great change of pace.....and a little touch of home while away. If you have to count pesos while you are away you should stay home.

Thanks for making this a sticky... Cabarete is definitely a great place, and a cool change of pace from Sosua, even if just for a day (or night)...anyone with questions about the restaurants or bars, feel free to ask...

There are none really worth staying in.

    Re: Fine Dining is available

and for the record, pretty much all the hotels in Cabarete are chica friendly, except the AI's... and there are several decent (not luxury by ANY means, but not nasty either) hotel options for $15-$30 a night...there are 1000's of young surfer type tourists that come to Cabarete every year, so these are where they often stay...few, if any of these places have websites, but www.activecabarete.com may have some...I'll do a little scouting (when the weather clears) and try to post some info for the ultra-budget conscious

As far as "decent" hotels - try Velero resort, el magnifico, villa taina, and a decent and inexpensive condo: royal residence. Don't be fooled by Sans Souci's ads for $12, $15 or $20 room rates...whatever the rate they advertise, is times 4 (4 people per room) still not a bad deal, they have several different hotels, most on the beach.

    Villa Taina isn't guest friendly.

What is the name of the restaurant just outside of Cabarete, in the middle of nowhere and off the beaten path, that has great lobster??? I'm pretty sure you have to travel a dirt road to get there.

    Re: Fine Dining is available

Seems like this thread is a little dusty, but the first post is excellent! I would also add a couple of other places for Cabarete.

Mojitos - down the beach, just past Lax and Pomodoro's. Best mojitos on the beach (and maybe in the country) and a good 2 for 150 peso happy hour. Also try the sandwich and juice combo 120 pesos!! Best cappuccino too. They close early (8 pm) and are also closed on Tuesdays. I think they are the best quality on the beach.

Dominican Food - try Casa Mami's. She has recently relocated next to the police station on the way out of town toward Sabaneta. Good Dominican meal for 150 pesos.

Near the beach - Cabaha - located right across from the ice cream spot behind Pomodoro's. The turkey kebabs or fish tacos are good, and the cerviche and hummus is fantastic
