Counterfeit dollars in circulation
Various shopkeepers, owners of filling stations and money changers along the north coast (Santiago, Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete) are complaining that they've been offered counterfeit US dollars over the last few days.

Counterfeit dollars in circulationThe counterfeit money consists of 20, 50 and 100-dollar bills. Money changer Freddy Antonio Abreu, exchanged 50 bills, all for 100 dollars, at an exchange rate of 33.4. The fake bills were so good that they passed every check. The money changer described the perpetrator as a tall white man with a slight foreign accent, driving a green Toyota Camry, dressed in jeans, sneakers, and a black sweater with a white collar. Witnesses said he was travelling with a young lad of about 15. Apparently this criminal has also visited other money changers and shops in the area, where he also paid with counterfeit dollars. The police are currently looking for this person and ask everyone to cooperate if they spot the perpetrator or can give any further information.

i saw this article on Sosuanews too. Im not sure what methods they use to check the bills but newer US bills are pretty difficult to counterfeit if you know what to look for.

More than likely the money changer guy doesn't know what to look for or didn't take the time to check the bills because he was in a rush counting his profits.
