The Center for Agricultural and Forrest Development (CEDAF) is reporting that it is going to export queen bees, since the Dominican bee is unique in the world. According to CFDAF head Juan Jose Espinal, local beekeepers are supplying the bees that will be certified for export. One of the advantages the DR enjoys is the fact that bees can be worked the whole year round because of climatic conditions. When there are no flowers, the bees can be fed with special, sugar-based, food. CEDAF is also working on maintaining the queens' genetic quality, and, at the same time, is offering queen bees for sale at subsidized prices. Currently on the world market a kilogram of pure honey is priced at US$1,50.
