I would rate this the best in Barahona. Right on the ocean. A tip: You don't need to take the AI package. You can just rent a room and use all the facilities for much less. If you choose to eat there you just pay.

There are better places to eat in Barahona for a better price.

I will be visiting there for sure. High ratio of haitianas. But any comparisons with Sosúa are crazy. Barahona has relatively few gringo visitors or ex-pat residents so there is no point-and-click mongering. You will need adequate Spanish or Ayisyen to succeed.

Based on the free AIDS test they administrated thru-out the DR this past weekend- (90 new cases) Baharona and Puerto Plata had the most positive tests. Wear two condoms.

I don't trust any "headline" statistics. You need to really dig down into all the criteria and data to get to the truth. And I would trust statistics emanating from the DR even less. Firstly they are incompetent and secondly someone will always want to put a spin on them.

But if they are true I should think Barahona's results are due to the proximity to Haïti where the AIDs rate is higher (though not as high as is sometimes quoted).

If by Puerto Plata it means the province rather than the city, then that figure could be explained by the inclusion of Sosúa with its huge and rapid turnover of whores.

    FROM DR1:
Tests reveal 70 new HIV cases
Over nine thousand people were tested for HIV over the Easter holiday. Teams of doctors, lab technicians and specialists attached to 25 Presidential AIDS Council (Copresida) mobile units carried out the tests. According to Listin Diario, most of the positive results were found in Barahona and Puerto Plata, and Peravia had the least number. Testing in the "bateyes", worker housing attached to sugar mills, showed a 3% to 3.5% incidence among people tested. Overall, the results matched the findings of the Demographic and Health Survey taken in 2007 (ENDESA 2007), which showed a 0.8% incidence in the general population. Copresida director Humberto Salazar told Listin Diario reporters that the tests were conducted in tourist areas, mainly Boca Chica and Puerto Plata, and added that the final report would be released today. END

The high rates seem to come from the bateyes, so they may have been focusing on the Haitians. Probably done during a holiday weekend so everyone was around and not out working. Sounds like they sent out mobile testing units to areas that do not have sufficient health care.

That's why I will scope it out. My first year or two in the DR I will probably rent only, but after that this might be a good area to buy. But do you think the airport will materialise during my lifetime? Doubtful, especially with a recession in the US.

They do have an Airport there but I dont know if it is use.

    http://www.caribbeanjet.com/en/airpo...al_airport.php

I did talk with someone who goes there quite frequently and he stated that the area is awesome. The girls are very friendly and the price is way lower than Sosua. Most of the hotels include breakfast and Dinner.

Spanish is required. I will post as soon as I get down there.

I did spend some time in San Cristobal not too far from Barahona and I have to tell you... The girls were chasing us out there. My cousin was swimming in the ocean and two chicas were trying to get his attention moving closer and closer to him. They were play fighting in the water and finally started bumping in to him. He was a little shy being the 1st time in the DR. He caught on quick and realized they wanted to talk to get his attention.

Some of these untouched areas are great mongering destinations.

It may have some small usage but it will only affect property values and infrastucture (which are the things which interest me) once it has regular flights from North America.

You have to love an airport named after a hot chica, though. I am probably the only ISOC member who remembers her in her prime. She mainly played in rubbishy musicals and swashbuckling films suitable for kids so I saw her films a few times. She was a forces pin-up and my elder brother, who was in the Marines, had a picture of her on his wall.

She drowned in her own bath at 37. Probably being Dominican she would have been safer squatting under the fawcet as usual.

Of course you are right. Guys keep posting that and everyone agrees and then two days later someone writes "The DR is finished, prices are getting too high, all the chicas are ugly, blah, blah" and everyone agrees with that too. People just keep forgetting that the DR is not Sosúa and Sosúa is not the DR.

    Re: Barahona

According to DR lore the most well endowed male specimens on the island come from Barahona. To the effect that if you tell a domincana "soy de Barahona" there's a high probability you'll get a knowing laugh out of her. My suggestion is if you're not packing it's probably some place you should stay away from.
