Isn't that just the result of some weird tidal shift they have going on.
Read something about the storms on the east coast were affecting the whole area causing flooding at the POP airport as well as Cabarete
If the tide shifts back to normal one would think the water will return and will again be like it once was

This is Playa Alicia beach in 2015
A storm created this entire beach
When I was there in January 2018 a different storm had reclaimed more than half of the beach
That day the waves were so strong they were surfing there.
Not to easy to tell from the pictures but half of that beach is no longer there at least on that day.
Looks like Cabarete Beach got hammered pretty good
