So, I checked today's cash rates at Scotia bank (Compra rates, they buy USD, CAD and euros, pounds and yens)

I checked at the same time the interbank rates for USD/CAD/DOP

For every 10,000 peso ATM withdrawal I pay about 200 pesos fees to the Dominican bank, and at the same time I loose 2.5% to Visa over the interbank rate)

I did all calculations for 60,000 pesos for three types of scenarios,

    a) Exchange CAD cash into DOP in Dom Rep
    b) Exchange CAD cash into USD cash at home and then USD cash into DOP
    c) Withdraw DOP at the ATM billing CAD account

All three came very close, so the preference is not a price, but convenience, safety etc.

The only way to save was in b) when I go through the foreign exchange broker and not the bank, and it saves 2% or in my example 1,200 pesos for 60,000 pesos in cash.

There may be other bump if I can find the exchange in Dom Rep which pays more for USD cash than Scotia, and is safe and proven. So, who pays more in Sos. and by how much?
Very interesting. I am from Canada and heading for my first trip and trying to figure out what to bring. I think i have to pay the hotel in cash $USD.

Is it easy to exchange CAD to DOP or are there only certain places that do it?
What is the withdrawal limit on the ATM?

Exchanging CAD is not a problem

ATM limit depend on the bank ATM you are using and what your bank allows.

Just recently, I paid USD cash to cover my accommodation, and made 3 ATM withdrawals 10,000 pesos each. The ATM fees were 200 pesos per withdrawal. Each withdrawal is within my daily limit and within my withdrawal limit per transaction.

You can bring several debit cards from different banking institutions and a couple of credit cards to manage your risks in case one of the cards gets blocked for security reasons.

Pushing 50:1 the last couple of months. Sounds like years back. It'll be interesting to see how long it can maintain...

I would be surprised to see the exchange rate drop now. This has been a slow and steady rise over years. The last time that we hit 50 or better, the peso jumped from about 17 to 52 quickly, due to government shenanigans. About a month later it was under 30 pesos to the dollar and falling. Looks like 50 to 1 is here to stay.

Obviously not in the places where you are being quoted 4,000 pesos!

Plenty of chicas around for 1,000 to 1,500 for ST. Ok, they might not be the twin sister of Ariana Grande, but they aren't dumpster diving either.

On two occasions while staying at the Garant, I paid 1000 ST. Once, when I met CentralNJ, who was staying there, we partied at the pool with a couple chicas who had been outside. His was a bit more attractive than the one who I was with, but when I offered her 1000 for an ST, she agreed.

The other was from Andres, she came on a motoconcho and I gave her 1500, to include the moto. Slender and 20 years old. Needed to be home before dark because she didn't want to be caught anywhere near Duarte at night.

What yayow has said about the chicas there is true. The one's who live in that area but don't want the reputation that hanging around Duarte will give them, or maybe even their families, want to be as inconspicuous as they can.

Smooth, I hear you. 1mil used to be my price point for daytime and 1.5 mil for nighttime ST. It still happens sometimes, mostly with long time relationships.
Maybe the price point has changed or maybe it is just me. The thought of haggling over what amounts to $10 and taking a chance on a whack session because of it doesn't appeal to me anymore.

I was trying to be humorous, not point a finger....Lo siento.

Yeh ... I'm not so concerned with money exchange rates as I am with, shall we say, "honey exchange rates;" i.e. how much money to give Conchita for an hour or so of Afternoon Delight, a late-evening treat, or a Midnight Special, maybe with sloppy-seconds for breakfast.

Well, I guess I'll find out when I get to Boca Chica. (Ten days out.)

Was in Boca Chica last weekend. Pretty much 2k for 2hours+ was the acceptable rate. Not too bad when I was getting 50.20 pesos for the dollar.

Its cool. Sometimes it's hard to gauge HOW someone posts something, if meant to be serious or joking, rather than reading it without the context intended.

    No offense taken.

Damn! That is a full 20 pesos more per dollar than what I was getting my very first trip in March of 2007. I know prices have gone up as well, but all things considered, with the buying power of the greenback, the cost of a trip to the DR, excepting the airfare, is probably about equal once on the ground with what it cost back then.

2000 DOP is now just below $40 usd. Amazing!
