Carnaval takes place every weekend in February. I went to the Carnaval in La Vega in 2005 during my first trip ever down in DR. It was great. The Carnaval takes place on a wide street that is a couple miles long. There were tons of hot chicas there, plenty of drinking, and one big party atmosphere.
Those pictures show the cool costumes but be careful of those guys. They walk down that street in a parade, carry these rubbery inflated balls attached to rope, and then they wack people in the ass with them. It hurts if you get hit. They also sell the rubber balls on rope so you can wack chicas in the ass with them as well. Never forgot seeing a little 6 year old boy at the Carnaval wacking hot grown ass chicas in the ass with his rubber ball (forgot the Spanish name for it)
I believe they are called "Lechones" made of a pig's bladder pumped up with air!

I'll guess two hours from Sosua or less.

La Vega is within a 20 minute drive from Santiago heading south so Mr. Pink is right about the time. Absolutely it is worth going to. Tons of Dominicans in the streets dancing, drinking , singing, partying. I had a great time. When I went there were no hardly any tourists but tons of chicas
La Vega is 15 - 20 minutes away from Santiago
If God didn't want me to sin he wouldn't have given me a penis...
Only decent place to stay in La Vega is the Hotel Rey. phone 1-(809) 256-2970. E-mail for Hotel Rey: rey.fernadez@verizon. net.do. Phone # 1-(809) 573-4434. Fax (809) 242-1985. Cell phone (809) 543-8565. There are two cabannas on the main highway-Galaxy and (don't remember the bname of the other one. Both nice. Shouls get a cabanna for under 1000 pesos for all night during carnival. Hotel Ray will want at least 1100 pesos per night during Carnival-although they will ask for more depending on occupancy. Book early though as they tend to fill up on Carnival weekends-especially the last weekend. Be prepared to have hundreds of chicas smashing their bodies against you as you try to make your way down the main Carnival streets. The best part comes at dusk as the Carnival is winding down for the evening. If you have a car ( make sure it is stuffed with several six-packs of Presidente) just park on the main road in front of the Carnival area.. Chicas come by in droves (still looking to party after having spent all of their beer money). You probably won't need a hotel. The last Saturday before Carnival ends there is usually a free concert on the baseball field (next to the Carnival area)-hundreds of chicas.
Ok, any other places to stay? How about those near the airport?
