That's very true. If you always hang in Sosua with your friends, you'll never learn spanish. That's one of the reason why I prefer to travel solo, I meet and chat with much more different people than if I was always with friends from my country. Not to say that if I meet a member I will not sit and chat with him, I always like to meet other members.
Some people, even from my country, have a difficult time figuring where I come from.
I like it that way.
The flight.
It was the worst airline I had in my life: Canjet. The seats were like 1,5" thick, no leg room, bad food, etc.
It took about 4 hours 20 to reach POP airport from Quebec city, usually it's less than 4 hours. They probably save on fuel by going slowly.
I must say that I'm a little spoiled, last time in October I was upgraded first class on Air Canada. Day and night.
But the price was not bad for 2 weeks, $580 and I made it back home alive !
For the rum lovers.
I found a bottle that I never saw in the DR before: Bermudez Don Armando 10 years old. What a great rum ! I found it in a little dusty shop in Las Terrenas.
It's the only Dominican rum made from pure sugar cane. All the other one are made from molasses. It's aged 10 years so it's really smooth. Great on ice.
If you ever tried Barbancourt 5-stars, you know what I'm talking about.
Hi ILN
I was glad to put a face to the name after all this time. Sorry we did not have time to organize something together but there will be plenty of opportunities in the future, I'm sure, including an outing to Haïti together.
Great report on the peninsula. I was intending to go there soon anyway, but these comments make me even keener. Sounds like my sort of place!
Throw in some guandoles and leave out the cola and it would be my favorite meal at a bargain price. Was 520 pesos really for two persons?
Hi Weyland, thank you for your comments. I can't write a story like you but I tried to put useful details for anyone who might be interested in the place.
I've nothing against the Americans, it was just an observation ! Did not saw any brits neither ! I heard that the Thunderstars were there for a couple of days, I'm curious to hear what they tought.
As for the meal, It was only one meal but we were not that hungry and we had enough for two. She had a Sprite and I had 2 grande Presidentes, so I tought it was quite cheap. We even got a ride to the bus station for free ! Great people, when I'm there again, I'll stop again.
And, yes, I don't forgot about Haiti. I could have gone with the girl I was with but not enough time.
Oh, your reports/stories are great, as always !
thanks great trip report! not boring at all. place looks really nice.might have to grab a novia and do the trip myself. thanks again
Other than last time in DR, I usually rent a car for my entire stay, get my map, and just go... I go between Santiago and Sosua, and also to the Capital...
An American friend I met down there is a bit more adventurous than me (ex military guy)... He just literally grabs a packpack, and jumps on the Gua-guas from town to town...
Next time there I want to do something similar, with chics i've met, are meeting now, but i've gotta rent a car.... just like the freedom...
Yes, I was thinking about renting a car but I changed my mind. I don't like the idea of having to always think about a car on vacation. I would feel like a slave: is it safe there, am I sober enough to drive, can I park it there, do this motoconcho will hit us, etc.
On the other hand I like to ride on buses and gua-guas (or publicos). I find it less adventurous than driving a rental car and you're never alone ! Always interesting peoples to meet on board.
Anyway, go see the place and try to report back !
I totally agree with all this. On two different holidays I have gone to distant pueblos with guys in their rentals and when we got there they were frightened to get out of the car and leave it to look around, so what was the f*cking point of their driving for 45 minutes each way?
Even better is my system of not having a car myself but letting guys like Ajax, Thunderstar and WhyNotMe drive me around. I would have liked to tip them generously but I was worried they would be offended so I just criticised their driving instead.
But gua-guas and publicos are fun, though.
That's the way to go !
I had a great roadtrip in Cuba with Whynotme driving. He's a great driver, I don't know what was your complaints ! He got a ticket but it was not his fault...
I was not alone on the backseat, there was LM and a playful Cubana. She entertained us while Whynotme drove and Kevy co-piloted !
Man, I miss these Cuban road trips....
Yes, he is a very skilful driver, I was just kidding. He kindly took me and a similar line-up to Santo Domingo (LM, Kevy and TG37). Actually it was Kevy's navigating on the way back that I was criticising, but at least I got to see parts of SD which I otherwise would not have.
If Kevy reads this my ass is toast
Nothing better than Cubana hitch hikers!!!!!!!
