    The change guys........

Last night as they offered 28 to the dollar I told them it was 35 in Santiago starting today. They wanted to buy at 30 from me.

Everyone will know my name after 27 days here.

You really do get a better deal in STI...

I think that when psriches and I land I am going to change $200US in Santiago before we hit Sosua...

Those cash guys are all a rip off...

I always get the feeling that the money is counterfeit or something, and why are they always giving such a crappy rate...

Yeah, I never trusted these guys, but when I used the money at the store, they checked it with the ultraviolet and it accepted it. I find the banks offer more and you have to haggle a lot just to get what you would at the bank up the street.

I don't think I will find the guy that gave me 10 pesos/dollar more around again, but I will try.

I don't think he understood the differnce between the dollar and the euro. He thought he was taking me by giving 3820 for 100 Usd, instead of 3830.

The change guy in Sosua are fair enough-it's a small place.

But beware in the big city. I got royally ripped off in Santo Domingo in January by a really slick professional street grifter-while 2 smart, saavy, streetwise Dominicanas looked on.

We were in SD and parked right next to the Three Heros near Zona Colonial. We got out of the CR-V, and I was approached by a change guy who offered 32-1 (rate was 28-1 elsewhere). Hell, yeah! I give the guy $US200-while my novia and her best friend (a smart, educated, slick, street-wise Dominicana) stood there and watched the whole thing. The guy counted out my money, bill by bill, and it was correct (mostly 500 peos notes). He handed it to me. Then before I could put it away, he grabs it back out of my hand and said, "Senor, to show you I'm honest, I will count it again"...and did. I was a little skeezed about this, but he proceeded to count the money again, in front of us all (again), and it was "correct". I took it, put it in my pocket, and we walked away.

Fast forward to a little later. My novia and I were in the cabana (Dominicans use them as cheap motels, not just for sex-Mom RD and the other girl were in the room next door) getting ready to go to Masson de la Cava for dinner. I was putting the money away, and counted it.

Son of a bitch!!!!!!!!!!! That little weasel change guy substituted 10 peso notes for the 500's when he recounted it!!!! I had been fucked, and it cost me about $US 140!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lesson learned. That will NEVER happen to me again. I just paid for tuition to become a little more aware and assertive.

My Dominican friends were amazed at how good this guy was. They BOTH watched the whole transaction from 3 feet away and didn't see him do it either.

In Sosua, I use the change guys (well, one anyway), Judy's, or Super Super on liquor delivery day. In Santiage, there are many reputable cambios everywhere, and the casino @ Gran Almirante. In Santa Domingo, I will NOT get change on the street. SD is a great city, but it has an ugly underbelly that you have to be careful of.

I let greed cloud my reason. If the guy on the street had offered 28-1, I would have blown him off. But I put myself into the situation to be f@cked by 4 additional pesos.

    Caveat Emptor.

Santo Domingo has big time hustlers and most of them are from NYC either they got kicked out of the US for a crime they commited or they fled back to avoid prison time in the US. I can spot a hustler a mile a away being that Im from NYC and most of the guys here that are from NYC know what Im saying to all the newbies who go down there for there first time trust know one .

I would never use the change guys anywhere...in any country. When I cash money out...usually I'll have a cab waiting for me outside or for small amounts I'll send an errand boy.

I think it's absolutely nuts changing money on the street. I'm colombian and to us it just screams sucker. You're screaming to the world you have dough in your pocket.
