the taxes to the DR is pricing them out of the tourism market.....
thats one of the reasons most canadians don';t go as often as we used too.......the taxes are 320bucks.........i can go almost anywhere for less than a flight to the dr. (its actually almost as cheap to go all inclusive as i am doing next month)
a flight to europe is even cheaper than to the dr
you only live once, but if you live it right once is enough
It is really the DR Gov that has raised the taxes (about 4-6 years ago).
Of the $133.80 in taxes $82 goes to the DR and $51 to the US. From the Continental website, here is the breakdown by tax and fee.
Note: AA, Continental and Jetblue charge/pass on $133.80 in taxes and fees, Delta charges/passes $101.60. For those of you that use Delta, do you pay the exit tax at check-in?
Dom. Republic Airport Authority Fee 30.00
Dom. Republic Airport Infrastructure Fee 32.60
Dominican Republic Departure Tax 20.00
Subtotal 82.60
U.S. Federal Transportation Tax 16.10
U.S. Security Service Fee 2.50
U.S. Passenger Facility Charge 4.50
U.S. APHIS User Fee 5.00
U.S. Immigration User Fee 7.00
U.S. Federal Transportation Tax 16.10
Subtotal 51.20
Total 133.80

Dont forget the Tourist card, another $10 . Thats a form of a tax.
One of the ways to pay less taxes and FEES from Canada is to take Westjet. There are less fees because it is a scheduled flight and not a charter. Also 2 checked bags are free and the ticket includes exit tax and a tourist card. Westjet site has got a moving schedule scale to find a cheaper total price. Prices are competitive when there is a sale. Try it. The con is food and movies are extra.
By the way one might save $10 tourist card entering DR with one of several passports on the list.

some places are higher obviously but some great deals to be had. the falling euro has really helped european travel customers.
last week paris was on sale for 599 return tax included
thanks for the info
i use www.sunseekers.ca for 90%of my travel. they also have westjet on their site and compare several airlines.they are always within a few bucks of all their competitors.
for my june dr trip i chose air canada even though it was 5 bucks more than the others because;
seats are more comfortable with more legroom
i get aerogold miles which will definately move me up to elite stautus for 2011 if my trip to thailand now doesn't quite get me there
they stock lots of rye
the downside is you pay for food in economy and for a 4 hour flight its not worth the extra to move up to buisness class
