The DR climbed to fifth place in the Central American and Caribbean Games, after winning five gold medals yesterday. The DR has 25 medals in total, including 5 silver and 15 bronze. Yesterday, 24-year old weightlifter Yudelkis Contreras won 3 gold medals in the 53-kilogram category. She becomes the first Central American and Caribbean woman to lift more than 200 kilos, with her 213-kilo lift. She also set a Pan-American record, with 117 kilos. The previous record was 96 kilos.
The victory was extra sweet for Contreras. In the Beijing Olympics she had been accused of doping. Initially, she had tested positive but was cleared after her B sample came back negative.
The DR also won gold in skeet, with a win by the team of Henry Tejeda, Sergio Pinero and Elvin Rodgers. The DR won medals in fencing, judo, weightlifting and skeet, and Rossy Felix won gold in fencing.
