The Dominican Society of Gastroenterologists is warning society about a growing problem: fat. According to the doctors, 45% of the population now suffers from some problems associated with obesity: increased diabetes, blood pressure problems, arthritis, and colon and bladder cancers. Doctor Alberto Santana, the DSG president, told reporters that between 3.0 and 3.5 million Dominican are now overweight and need to slim down. Dr. Santana pointed out that in the United States a reported 65% are overweight and in Europe, the number is between 50 and 55% of the population. Santana gave his report at the annual meeting of the gastroenterology society in San Francisco de Macoris.
