The police have rescued a kidnapped businessman who was seized in Santiago last Wednesday. One of the kidnappers was killed and one other was wounded during the rescue operation. Apparently the motive for the kidnapping was a debt owed by the victim's son, according to one newspaper, or his friend, as reported in another, in New York City. The key element to solving the case was the fact that witnesses had said that the vehicle used in the crime had a license plate that ended in the number 82. Ten hours later, two police patrol units spotted the vehicle in Santo Domingo and managed to intercept it at the corner of 16th Street and Nicolas de Ovando, arresting two of the kidnappers and freeing the victim. Using information provided by the two arrested, the police moved in on the leaders of the crime, one of whom died in the resulting shootout. According to the victim, a witness told the police that "Those guys have a kidnapped person in that car," and the police, part of the Safe Barrio Program, gave chase.
