Haitian women arriving at San Pedro de Macoris Antonio Musa hospital's emergency rooms to give birth use up 25% of the budget of the largest public hospital in the southeast. Hospital administrator Nerey Mejia says that when the women come to give birth it is the first and only time they see a doctor during their pregnancy. He told Hoy newspaper that the average Haitian family has nine members. Hospital director Dr Luis Guillermo Hernandez says that most of the women have anemia and arterial hypertension, which makes their care more expensive. He said that most of the women refuse any family planning methods. He said that even though the Haitians have many children, they are the poorest of the poor in the DR.
