The thousands of young people who attended the Catholic Church's Youth Festival over the weekend clamored for an end to the corruption and violence that is an everyday occurrence in the Dominican Republic. Several parish priests called for wider gun controls and the disarming of everyone, not just the street gangs that make life very difficult in many of the barrios of the large cities. The young people also called for the end to the general strike at the UASD (the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo - the only state run university), which is now entering its fourth week. The young people were also harsh critics of the country's politicians, saying that they needed to be careful since their actions would serve as examples for other to follow. The youth festival took place at the Mauricio Baez gymnasium in the Villa Juana area of Santo Domingo.
