Was looking and seems like theres alot of different money denominations in the DR. My question is what denominations to you guys ask for when exchanging your money. Which denominations do you find yourself using the most and what are the most convenient ones to have with you.

DO NOT accept anything larger than RD1000 Peso notes from the cambio!
Always pay with a large bill so you have exact chica cambio.
10, 25 Peso coins are handy to stockpile for motos.

moto: 20 in the day, 30 @ night.

2000 dops can be a pain because you'll find few places to change them.

You should have a few of the little stuff for tips. I give the classico waiter 120 for a 100dop drink, so I go with 100's and 20's.

1000's and 500's are good for the chicas. 1500, 2000, 2500 being common.

Sosua sucks for change. People always complaining they have no change. Sometimes its true but usually it isn't. I find it helpful to try and conciously keep 200-300RD in small bills whenever possible.

Less hassle paying for stuff especially if your haggling on prices. Be ready to pay with exact change.

I always go to Banco Popular right after I land, with usd100's, and ask for only 500's, 100's, 50's & 20's. CO always lands at 1pm, so easy to do.

Don't know the street of Banco Popular, but go down dr rosen, past pedros, past rockys, past NG, and go left at the 1st intersection. BP will be on your right few hundred feet. you can't miss it.

I can never get that combination at the cambios or street guys. And you always have to use the cambios or street guys at some point so at least I start the trip with a reasonable combination of bills.

It's a real pain to need to buy something small at nite and all you got is a 1000rd bill, and everybody says they don't have change.

The playero supermercados usually give a good rate as well and you can pick up what you need for your room while you're there.

Its been almost 3 years since i was last in Sosua and i remember clear as day those shop owners always saying they couldnt make change. I had to have small bills for tips.I was getting tired of tipping to much all the time due to not having smaller bills in my pockets. So i needed a plan lol

I remember being in the casino and i had a bunch of 25 pesos chips. Id stick them in my pocket and everytime i had to get up to take a piss or just walk around, id stop at the casheir and cash just one of them in everytime i walked by the cage.. If i took them all at once to the cashier, she would just give me a 500 peso note. By the end of the night, i had 20 of those 20 pesos notes and 20 of those 5 peso coins lol Problem solved

I usually start with 2000 peso notes. (I use those for dinner since that seems to be what I spend with drinks and tips)

The 20 peso notes are old and ratty and many stores won't take them. (They give them as change though!) You also need to be careful with the new 200 peso note....even though they are a different color than the 20s, it's an EZ mistake to give one out after few drinks.

I change a 2000 peso note in the morning at my hotel (500 and 100s) for chump change... and keep it separate from my larger bills....

also, I divide everything by 3 when figuring a bill after booze. (Exchange rate is 33. something)

100 pesos is roughly $3USD
500 pesos $15-16
1000 pesos is $33

Hope this helps......

ps~ I don't keep coins....I give them to the kids in the street to get them out of my face.

What about just bringing like a hundred dollars in one dollar bills to use for smaller purchases , taxis , tipping, etc or are people just against using the U S dollar at all while there. It seems this might be the way to go if its a pain to get the smaller notes there.

Don't do it. Just change to pesos, it's much easier.

You'd have to carry all the ones. Besides, when buying a drink, 32 pesos is anywhere from a 32% to a 70% tip.

You also give everyone you do business with down there a chance to mess with you if you use them to pay for anything.

You can't get away from the pesos because that's what you'll get as change.

It doesn't really matter how much you change, except that if you don't want to get caught short, why not change more?

I did $500 at a whack. That gives you about 16,000 dop or so. That's enough for girls and food for half the week or better.

Not even close bro...I am far from rich, but I do know how to budget so when I am on vacation I can party. I was in the DR 20+ weeks last year and I have noticed it's getting a little pricey...hotels and airfare are cheap for me, but meals and beers are no bargin.

For starters, I usually wife-up with an ATF....no pay for PUTA (in the direct sense)......

My average day (in the Zona Colonial-Sto Dgo w/ an ATF) starts with FREE breakfast at my hotel....lunch, is multiple beers and food ($1000DRP-$1500DRP) and dinner can be light (same as lunch) or some place nice ($2000DRP). It's a tourist area, and I know I pay premium prices at certain places....but, I've never had a "bad" meal and I always drop an extra 10% to the help....I never wait for a table and get treated well.

I always empty the mini-bar in the room (set the shit aside) and fill it with store bought water, beer, Cokes, rum etc....I don't buy any "imported booze" like HENNESEY or Johnny Walker...the DR shit is CHEAP.

My result to this formula, unlimted good pussy, good food, cold beer, little or no bullshit.......

I don't go to So-sewer, but I've heard it's cheaper there to eat, but from the stories I read here, it's not worth the aggrivation some experience.

My last trip cost me about $1500 for 6 days....including airfare, taxis, hotel....and my time on the rock.

I learned a long time ago, you spend more money worrying about saving nickels and dimes than you will if you go and just enjoy good times.

It depends on what you want.

Let's say a chica a day runs you DR$ 500 for ST in the afternoon or DR$ 1,000 ST in the evening
Breakfast DR$ 125 - 250 (alone, incl coffee)
Lunch DR$ 250 - 500 (alone, incl 2 drinks)
Dinner DR$ 350 - 750 (alone, incl 2 drinks)

Keep in mind that the bottom numbers have you eating in Dominican places and at roadside stalls and fucking dogs.

So, to me a reasonable number would be around US$ 100 a day, to enjoy yourself (incl a girl), hang out on the beach and have good food

That's about right...for spending money for one guy to fuck, eat and drink. If you think you're going to get to do a session at Passions, hit a casino, a dance club and/or hang out with some ISOC road dogs....add fitty a day to that, and live well.

I think the problem is the DR has gotten a rep that it is a CHEAP place to go to.....it is not.....it is CHEAPER than the U.S. for certain things (HOEtels, pussy and Dominican RUM) but....even RICE and FLOUR has gone up in recent weeks, so food (and fuel) are headed up.

My biggest savings is my airfare (Spirit from Fort Lauderdale) I never spend more than $250...and the other day they offered me a "special fare" that was $136 round trip! I can't drive anywhere round trip for that!

Cainer, while I don't want to give up what I make...do the math, I was in the DR 20+ weeks last year...I have NO LIFE in the USA, I save my pesos to go away to play!

Safe travels!

This post should be in the D.R. monger bible. Of course there will be days when you want to plan something a little mre expensive like an upscale restaraunt or a TLN with a superstar but if you bring $4,000RD with you and plan to spend $3,000RD over the course of the day you'll cover most eventualities.

I peronally don't like $2,000RD notes because in the dark they can be confusing to my old/ drunk eyes so I'll usually carry three $1k (RD) notes and stash two 500's. I'll get one of the $1k's broken down to hundreds at the desk on the way out. All change from the 100's goes into my tip pocket.

I got the impression u went for 2000 peso meals everyday and i guess i was somewhat jealous that i have to live on 150 pesos meals or eat the food i bought at supermarcado back in my room, just so i can stay within my budget.

Hey guys. This post is for the new guys who have never been to the DR but are thinking of going. NEVER use American money in the DR. Yes, they will accept your American green , with a big smile on their faces. Why? You have now placed the "exchange rate" squarely in their hands. You will get screwed every time. I am not talking about tips. I am speaking of purchasing things. Always exchange your money.

My experience is mostly with Santo Domingo. When you arrive at the airport (Las Americas SDQ) remember to have one 10 dollar bill per traveler. You must purchase a "tourist card" which is your entry tax. After you clear immigration and retrieve your bags, you must then go through customs. As soon as you clear customs, there is a bank directly on the right. But be advised, they charge a large fee to exchange money. In my opinion it is best to exchange a small amount ($100.00 usd) at this location. That way, you have money to eat a little something and have money for a taxi. Then seek out a bank in town with a better exchange rate. For me, Western Union has the best exchange rates in Santo Domingo. Other members might know of better locations than mine and I am sure they will correct me.

Another option is using your credit/debit cards. There are AMT's in the lobby area of SDQ. They are located next to the the pizza place and video arcade. You can get a decent exchange rate using these machines. BUT! Beware of using cards in the DR. Not so much with ATM's but the DR is notorious for people stealing numbers from cards and then using the numbers to steal your money. For me personally, I only bring one card and it is for emergencies only.

Every man is different. I personally like the 1000 peso bill. What ever you are trying to do there, it always seems to be in that range. After a few purchases you will have plenty of smaller bills.

prtyr2
05-13-2008, 06:36 PM
Some ATMs in SD only spit out 1k notes which are hard to get change for when paying for taxis etc. Even 500 peso notes are tough for some taxi guys. I always try to have 100 peso notes and smaller to pay for taxis and not have to look for change.

Beads says he doesn't believe sometimes when they say they don't have change. I have run into that. I was in a piano bar last week or so and all I had was 1000 peso notes. . ..they were having all the girls wear bikinis and a few were gonna get up and dance on the bartop. I asked my waitress to change a 1000 peso note. . . . she gave it to the "manager" and he said we can't change it. I said OK give me my bill. . . . .the dope.

I called himover and said I wanted change to tip the girls dancing which would help him hold onto them longer. I said give me my bill and I can either:

1- pay it take the CHANGE and leave

2- or pay it and use the change to tip the girls

I said because he was being a prick I was leaning towards number 1. I said if he didn't want me spending my money there I'd go to a bar that actually wants my money. . . . he changed it with a smile. . . .the dope. . .lol . .

I seldom ask for change, and almost always have at least a few hundred pesos in small bills.

But, like Prtyr, it's almost sadistically enjoyable asking for change somewhere, not getting it, consuming something cheap, then pay for it with the same bill they said they couldn't change, and watch the change mysteriously appear.

Kind of a "I'm smarter than you are, and I just proved it" attitude..

I think we may be the only country where people walk into say a 7-11 and pay for a soda with a $20 bill or even a $50 and dont even thing twice about it. In Europe for example if you do that, they will assume you are USING them as a bank so to speak to make change and frown upon it a bit. They expect people to carry the appropriate denominations to pay for their goods, this is even true in a grocery store where almost everyone carries a change purse for the coins with which to pay exact change. I almost never see that here in the US. I guess thats why everyone thinks we are all rich here, which is certainly no longer true the way the Dollar is sliding into the Abyss.

Was looking and seems like theres alot of different money denominations in the DR. My question is what denominations to you guys ask for when exchanging your money. Which denominations do you find yourself using the most and what are the most convenient ones to have with you.

What works for me is
when I first exchange my money, I change 1000US. Get plenty of 1000 peso notes. Plenty of 100 peso notes. And keep 100us in ones for tipping. 100us in fives. That should stem a lot of useless spending. Nobody ever has change for 100,50,20 us. On the tipping in bars and resturants, 20 pesos is too low and 50 pesos is too much.

I definitely recommend to watch out mixing 1000's with 100's they look very similar and cost me 900 pesos one night at passions.

There was a chica dancing and doing a great pole show and I was sitting with my ATF chica and thought I would give a tip so out comes my money clip and I grab what I thought was a 100 and gave it to my ATF to tip the girl dancing.

About 10 mins later I went to the bathroom and checked if I had enough pesos to go to the back room. And then I realized that I was a 1000 short so I asked my ATF what I gave her and she thought that it was a 100 also but said maybe 1000 so the girl dancing made about 2300 for dancing 2 songs.

She got 2 1000 bills then Peters wife over herd and asked if it was a mistake and wanted to know if I wanted 900 back. I declined and had to put that as lessen learned.Thats why I like 500's! I was very impressed with Peters wife and all the girls that work there. I'm going back in 3 week and can't wait to get another soapie! :)

Sure you like the 500 peso bills until you alsohave a 2000 peso note. . . .when you make that mistake it's a 1500 peso one. I always try and put 1000 or 2000 peso notes in my wallet or seperate pocket from my regular cash.

You are even more likely to make that mistake paying a taxi at 4 am drunk off your ass and his dome light doesn't work!

The ATM at Popular Bank give 500 and 200 notes. This has worked fine for me so far. Also found this bank also gives the opticn of English directions Just half block down and half a block left of New Garden.

i think carry 20's. 100's and 500's denomination is the wise way to go.

When I withdraw 10,000 pesos at the ATM at Popular Bank in Malecon Center (in SD), it gives me 18, 500-peso bills and 10, 100-peso bills.

I also follow the English directions.

This post was on DR1 today-looks like we have some larger denomination coins coming

The Central Bank is denying reports of a shortage of change in the DR and says that 3.4 million RD$5 coins have been put into circulation since 18 June. Officials say that the use of coin machines, juke boxes, tolls and bus fares has lead to an increased need for coins. The Central Bank says that shortly a further 1.5 million RD$5 coins will be put in circulation and that another, 500,000 RD$10 coins will soon be released to the public. A press release by the CB reports the bank has requested the minting of 15 million RD$5 coins and 10 million RD$10 coins. They have also requested 10 million RD$25 coins. Hoy reports that three million of those coins are currently on a boat that is due to arrive in the DR in mid July. By December the DR is expected to have received 40 million RD$1 coins, 23 million RD$5 coins, 23 million RD$10 coins and 15 million RD$25 coins

I have been back in town for two weeks after a six week break and I find the situation has improved. There are lots of the new 5 peso coins and I have noticed more of the very grubby 20's around. Maybe they put them back in circulation to eleviate the situation.
