He's being described in the US press as "the most dangerous man with a baseball bat in his hands these days" and "the greatest superstar in the National or American League." He is the darling of sports writers. He was a disappointment to Dominicans in the World Baseball Classic, but that may have just served as a warm up for his great start in the 2006 Major League season.

In his first 19 games of the season Santo Domingo-born Jose Alberto Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals had already has batted in 12 home runs and has 26 runs batted in. He also leads in the National League with most runs batted in at the start of the season. Over his first 19 games, he is batting .344, with 12 home runs, 28 RBI.

The National League's 2005 MVP last weekend became the ball players to fastest reach the 1,000 hits and 200 homeruns in a player's history - in only 806 games, displacing Willie Mays who needed 826 games to post those numbers.

26-year old Pujols needs one more home run to break the Major League record of 13, set by Ken Griffey Jr. in 1997, which was matched by Luis Gonzalez in 2001. With 28 RBIs, he's also four behind Mark McGwire's team record for April. The Cardinals have six games remaining this month.

These numbers are not unusual for Pujols who in his first year in the Major Leagues (2001) batted .329 with 37 homers and 130 RBI. He has stayed above 30 home runs per year since then, with subsequent years of 34, 43, 46 and 41 homers.
