Dominicans have become pasta eaters. El Caribe newspaper reports that pasta has replaced meat and fish, that have moved beyond the economic means of most Dominicans. El Caribe reports that pasta consumption is at 90 million lbs a year, or about 10 lbs. per capita per year. Central Bank statistics show that the consumption of pasta in 2005 was up 27%, going from 66.6 million lbs. in 2004 to 90 million lbs last year, or a 234 million increase. Of the total consumed, only 5% was imported pasta, or 4.5 million lbs. The rest is locally produced. Locally produced pasta costs around RD$17 per lb, compared to RD$35 per lb for chicken, and RD$50 for meat.
