Two Dominican psychiatrists are attributing the recent increase in suicides to the serious moral crisis that they say affects Dominican society. The suicide rate is highest amongst 12-30 year olds. Secundido Palacios and Christian Polanco considered that the trend is likely to continue. They told Listin Diario that young people have ingrained in them the need to get rich fast and cannot deal with reality. Other reasons are poverty, social exclusion, lack of opportunities, loss of hope, and low self-esteem among teenagers who do not find answers to their life plans. They said that the young are committing suicide because of the influence of imported lifestyles. Palacios and Polanco added that current measures of success do not involve becoming a professional or farmer, but having lots of money at any price and the fastest way possible. He favored an increase in education, work to create more jobs and study opportunities. He said that society needed to re-emphasize priorities of love, solidarity, work, study and planning, not free-flowing spending. Polanco recommended that the state, the church and neighborhood groups work together to reduce family disintegration.
