Orlando Gil, in his Listin Diario political analysis column, comments that the ruling party's intent appears to be to get the people to vote for the party. This explains why the PLD is leaning on an institutional type of advertising, regardless of who the candidate may be.

With President Leonel Fernandez's popularity running strong, he says that the ruling party hopes to encourage people to vote for the party. He points out that the idea behind the President's campaigning is to give a national dimension to the campaign, thus downplaying local weaknesses. Gil points out that in 2006, contrary to when the party campaigned in 1998 and 2002, the PLD is a party that is gaining in strength and all polls show it is in first place. "That is, in the present circumstances it can impose its candidates in a block and without focusing on particular characteristics," he points out. He stresses the party's strategy seems to be to try to attract people to the party, positioning all the candidates as "bearers of a new way of doing politics."

He says that while the PLD has won the occasional vote, it does not have loyal voters, and thus the emphasis on the party this time around. "What they want is for people to vote for the PLD without taking into consideration who the candidate is, which is a virtue that the PRD and PRSC have been able to achieve. That is so the party emblems have a specific weight, and likewise, the behavior of the militants". He explained that is what is behind President Fernandez's campaigning.
