The Administrative Secretary of the Presidency, Luis Manuel Bonetti has said that the government would delay implementing energy-saving measures until after the elections, set for 16 May. Campaigning in the DR is traditionally a gas-guzzler and big spender, but the government is choosing not to curtail spending at this time. Bonetti said that once the elections are over, the government would announce measures similar to those introduced last August.

Meanwhile, the president of the National Council of Business, Elena Viyella de Paliza, said that the government needs to apply fiscal and monetary policies that are coherent with the present high petroleum prices. She said the private sector has to cooperate in saving fuel and energy. Marcelo Puello, of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, says that measures need to be implemented because the trend is for prices to increase even further, as reported in Diario Libre.
