President Leonel Fernandez and First Lady Margarita Cedeno were in attendance for the opening of the 9th International Santo Domingo Book Fair, which took place at the National Theater last night. The book fair is being held at Plaza de la Cultura and will last for two weeks, until Sunday, 7 May, instead of 10 days as on previous occasions. This year, the fair is dedicated to Marcio Veloz Maggiolo, who is described as the country's most prolific living author. Argentina is this year's invited country of honor. Argentina's Deputy Foreign Relations Minister Leonardo Franco came for the event.
During his opening words, Culture Minister Lantigua described the event as an authentic festival of culture, the main one held in the DR, where film, dance, music, theater, the plastic arts, gastronomy and arts and crafts all have their space. This year, the book fair has four themes: the 45th anniversary of dictator Rafael Trujillo's assassination, the 500th anniversary of the death of Columbus, the 60th anniversary of the death of Pedro Henriquez Urena, and the dedication to the works of Veloz Maggiolo. This year's book fair consists of 481 exhibition stands, including 254 from overseas and 227 local ones. Some 2,051 activities are planned.
