Thousands of students were the main group of visitors on the first day of Santo Domingo's XI International Book Fair, which is being held at Plaza de la Cultura. Yesterday the Argentinean Pavilion was opened with tangos, speeches and commentaries by Maria Kodama, the long-time companion of Jorge Luis Borges. Part of the pavilion is dedicated to the famous Dominican intellectual, Pedro Henriquez Urena, who spent much of his life in Buenos Aires. Many of the author's personal items are on display, such as his typewriter, his Argentinean identification card and his membership card for the Argentine Academy of Letters. Henriquez Urena died in Buenos Aires in 1946. Hoy newspaper has a page dedicated to the fair, and today's edition points out that the street theater is quite interesting and can turn up anywhere within the fair's grounds. The actors portray political commentary, snippets of real life, poetry and other interesting bits of acting. One of the most praised features of the fair has been the order and neatness of the area. Today's activities include book launches, talks by different authors, and a conference by Maria Kodama on the life and times of Borges at 8:00 o'clock this evening.
