United States Ambassador Hans Hertell has told reporters that the Dominican Republic has all the right in the world to revise its current treaty of extradition with the United States. He emphasized the great cooperation that exists between the two countries.
Nonetheless, Hertell pointed out that in the middle of the VI Regional Meeting of Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General was not the appropriate moment to deal with the issue of a treaty that has been in force since the beginning of the twentieth century. All the while, Hertell emphasized the excellent collaboration between the two countries, especially in the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime. The ambassador's comments came after the Presidential legal advisor, Cesar Pina Toribio, had left open the possibility that the government might propose the idea of revising the existing agreement, due, in part, to cries that the United States was contravening some parts of the treaty. The Dominican Republic-United States of America Extradition Treaty dates from 1910, and had been approved by the Dominican Supreme Court. One other voice that is asking for a revision is that of the Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (FINJUS). The civic group expressed its concern about the fact that some crimes for which Dominicans are extradited carry much more severe punishment in the United States, beyond, in fact, the maximum 30 year sentence permitted under Dominican law.
