President Leonel Fernandez has handed out the first 31 credit cards to needy university students as part of a program aimed at benefiting as many as 100,000 students. The 31 cards were part of 552 that will be given out in the first phase. The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Ligia Melo, said that 25,000 students in the country's 43 universities and institutes will be selected for the cards, which have a credit limit of RD$10,000 per month. In two years time, the Minister projected a total demographic of 100,000 students as beneficiaries of the plan. The cards carry certain restrictions, and are for use in the purchase of books, food and other supplies at certain commercial establishments. The government is issuing the cards through the Banco de Reservas.
