Fourteen miles east of Santo Domingo is La Caleta Submarine National Park.
The park's main attraction is a boat, "the Hickory", which was purposely sunk in 1984 by the Group of Submarine Investigations (GIS) to create an artificial reef for marine life and to promote proliferation. A second more recent wreck, at a depth of 100 feet, is only a few minutes away by boat from the Hickory.
This underwater park can be reached in about 17 minutes by fast boat from Boca Chica, or about 25 minutes by slow boat from the public park on Las Americas highway.
