The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) is once again following through with its threat and is going on a 24-hour strike today. This is the fourth doctors' strike since February, with no solution yet in sight. Government officials have refused to sit down at the table with CMD reps and have said that any negotiations would take place after the 16 May presidential elections. Earlier this week, CMD president Waldo Ariel Suero dismissed proposals by President Leonel Fernandez that were aimed at improving the situation of doctors who work in public hospitals, clinics and social security facilities. The government was proposing that each doctor should work at just one medical facility but earning a better salary. Dr. Suero wants doctors to maintain their present status but with better wages. The doctors also want the government to create 1,600 new internship jobs, to maintain the status quo of the Dominican Institute of Social Security and eliminate any charges made to patients at public hospitals. They are also requesting an increase in retirement plans for the public hospital physicians.
