There is surplus production of chicken in the DR, to the tune of seven million pounds. Chicken producer Pollos Cibao president Carlomagno Gonzalez told Hoy that this figure came out of a meeting between Agriculture Minister Salvador Jimenez and poultry farmers. Gonzalez said that during the meeting, farmers gave the minister a list of production costs and other prices "so the minister may see the profit margin." Gonzalez also said that due to last week's national protests farmers failed to sell 300,000 chickens for fear that they'd be destroyed or be looted from the delivery trucks. According to the Pollos Cibao president there is a reserve of four million frozen chickens, but farmers don't want those chickens to be sold to the public, as they would lower the price per pound, leading to losses for the farmers.
