The National Federation of Traders and Businesspeople of the Dominican Republic (FENACERD) is attributing the sharp increase in food prices to external and international factors and not price gouging as has been alleged. During a press conference yesterday, Fenacerd president Antonio Cruz Rojas said that many products would inevitably go up due to external factors and not because of speculation. According to Fenacerd, international fuel prices, sea transport, the devaluation of the dollar, the high costs of raw materials and the recession in the United States. In the same breath Cruz asked the government not to politicize the high cost of food.
