Honesty might be the best policy, but it doesn't guarantee job security. Industry and Commerce Minister Melanio Paredes is facing this reality as traders are asking him to resign from his post following an unfavorable report released by the ministry highlighting the supermarkets' high profit margins on basic foods. Supermarket owners are rejecting the report and the National Organization of Commercial Businesses (ONEC) says that the wholesales competition guarantees the best price for the consumer. President of the National Low-cost Supermarkets Union (UNASE) says that the rise in food costs is the result of the increase in production costs, while the National Federation of Traders and Businesspeople of the Dominican Republic (FENACERD) says that the prices presented by Industry and Commerce are inaccurate and says that wholesalers are not speculating on the price of food. With this in mind Fenacerd is asking for Paredes to be removed from his post. In response to the claims of gouging and inflated prices, the National Institute for Consumer Rights Protection (ProConsumidor) visited national supermarkets and colmados as part of a plan by the Industry and Commerce ministry aimed at guaranteeing stable and fair prices.
