Yesterday, the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) held its fourth strike in as many months and promised that it would strike once again next Friday. Only a few patients made their way to the hospitals because of the strike, although doctors did treat emergency cases. CMD president Waldo Ariel Suero said that the strike had been a success. Doctors have been continually fighting for better benefits as well as the increase of their monthly wages to RD$58,000 per month. According to interviews in Listin Diario, citizens agree that the doctors should get higher wages, but the overall sentiment is that patients shouldn't suffer as a result of the strikes.
Listin Diario reports that if the government were to give in to the CMD's demands, it would mean a payout of RD$6 billion per year. Currently doctors' salaries range between RD$14,000 per month and RD$26,400 per month depending on experience. According to cardiologist and public health expert Fulgencio Severino, doctors in the DR should not be a paid a set salary, but a commission-based salary. He said it would be a mistake if the government were to do otherwise.
