Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) announced signing an agreement with EGE Haina power generation company to build and operate a coal-fired plant in the DR. Rolando Gonzalez Bunster, presidente of EGE Haina traveled to Seoul, Korea for the signing of the agreement with Lee Won Gul of Kepco. The plant would be worth an excess of US$500 million. Gonzalez Bunster explained this is part of the company's strategy to move to alternate fuel generation operations. He mentioned the conversion to natural gas of their 300 MW CESPM plant in San Pedro de Macoris, and the installation of 120 MW in wind power generation capacity by the CEPM branch in Punta Cana.
EGE Haina, has an installed capacity of 600MW and would expand its production by 240MW to be generated by the new coal-fired KEPCO facility.
Construction is due to begin this year and will be completed by 2011, according to the company press release.
KEPCO is South Korea's top energy company, producing, managing and distributing most of the electric power that the country uses.
