Yesterday, the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) incinerated more than half a ton of different kinds of drugs, mostly cocaine and heroin, seized during the first four months of this year. This is the largest amount of drugs incinerated by the authorities over a four-month period, according to Listin Diario. The DNCD has indicted 3,383 individuals since August 2004 and has investigated more than 5,200 people who have been detained in different regions of the country for their involvement in drug cases. Drugs incinerated included 537.5 kgs of cocaine (pure, liquid and in crack form), 90 kgs of heroin, 275 lbs of marijuana, 290,000 ecstasy pills and other substances. The incineration took place at the National Army First Brigade headquarters located on Duarte Highway. Attending were DNCD Director Rear Admiral Ivan Pena Castillo and other officers from the institution. Also present were the president of the National Drug Council, Mabel Feliz Baez, DNCD member Msgr. Fabio Mamerto Rivas, and the Mayor of Santo Domingo West, Perfecto Acosta.

News reports today carry statements by Rear Admiral Ivan Pena Castillo, president of the National Drug Control Department, on the ongoing purge at the DNCD. Hoy reported that at around 500 agents at the service of the DNCD have been removed since the change of government for possible liaisons with drug traffickers.
