An Organization of American States (OAS) delegation has held a meeting with the Central Electoral Board (JCE) to receive a complete report of the 16 May midterm electoral process. The group was led by Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin and the OAS representative in the DR, Bertha Santoscoy. They emphasized pending issues such as the printing of ballots and unresolved cases in the Contentions Chamber. Diario Libre reports that Ramdin is in the DR for the seventh meeting of Justice Ministers of the Americas. "For the OAS, electoral processes are of critical importance for the consolidation of democracy and as integral parts of the member countries' development process," said Ramdin. JCE Judge Nelson Gomez reported that the board discussed the preparations for the elections with the OAS representatives and also the participation of 67 electoral observers that the OAS will be sending for the elections.
United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Director Elena Brineman said that the US government is interested in clean, fair elections with a high level of participation, according to a report by Listin Diario. Brineman warned that if the public doesn't participate in the elections and only 40% of the citizens vote, then the candidates chosen won't be representative. "We are highly interested in the elections, we are watching them and I think this country has made much progress in this process," said the US official. She was speaking after attending a round table discussion on Transparency and Governability sponsored by Institutionality and Justice Foundation (FINJUS) at Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE).
