I would be surprised, unless it blips up for a day or so. The Gov't is really trying hard to push the peso back down..i think we may have to get used to mid thirties as being the norm for a while. Which ain't too bad, but certainly not the 48 we had for a bit.

1 US Dollar = 36.43400 Dominican R. Peso
1 Dominican R. Peso (DOP) = 0.02745 US Dollar (USD)

Median price = 35.25200 / 36.43400 (bid/ask)
Minimum price = 35.15300 / 36.33300
Maximum price = 35.25200 / 36.43400

Amazingly, and someone actually posted about this ,perhaps in jest, I got into a serious exchange rate/pricing debate with a favorita in BC last trip. When i was there last she was "X" for tln, when the peso was at 45, i think. It now had fallen to 36 but she was still asking "X", and I said no, i pay you "Y" because "X" is too much now that the dollar has fallen. And she launches into a detailed economic report about cost of living, against the flucuation of the dollar..blah blah. Some of these girls (especially those from el capital) really Do pay attention to the exchange rate. And they hope that we don't.

I think Jimmy posted something somewhere about the cost of living in the Dominican is still going up, so she may be speaking the truth. Jimmy, when you read this, repost your high grocery prices story/analogy again. Thanks.

I usually go food shopping on my last day there. April I spent about 5,000 pesos on a cart full of food. July I spent 9,000 pesos on a cart. In Augost I spent 5,000 on half a cart. Those prices are shooting up fast. 50 pounds of rice was about 500 and I paid 1,100 in Augost.

Maybe we should start paying in dollars instead, beacuse I notice that chicas are still quoting the same prices in pesos since may no matter what the exchange. Hence, if the asked for $1500pesos @$49, then we should just offer them $30US instead of paying what would be $46US at the current exchange rate of $1 @ $32pesos. We aren't buy pussy from an economics major they are dumb. Let us play to our advantage at all times!

Something is going on?
It may be IMF related.
It may just be Leonel and friends getting ready to buy a shitload of dollars down here to pay the long overdue electric bills at a more favorable Fx rate....... The Government has not been purchasing $USD since Hippo days. Any other guesses?

DO NOT PAY THESE OLD PRICES!!!

The next few weeks it is important that we set a new precedent and just not pay the ladies what they were getting last month. The Dollar has devaluated by 33% from 45 to 30.
We can not pay 1500 or even 1000 for a quickie.
I really could care less what rice costs, I am not paying "Hipolito prices"!
Stick to your guns, they will eventually figure it out, and food will have to slowly come down in price in the stores.

Buddy,... I personally know a girl that was getting 5000 pesos a night in Bohem... I will most likely see her in a week or so ... I will find out how much things are going for there even if I do not go for the take out service... this girl is not someone I have been with just a friend of the family sort of speak...

The reason its $200 a night is because they wanted 5000 when it was 45 or 50 to 1 and in a week or so it will be 20-25 to $1... therefore twice as much !

2500 pesos is about 80 US at the current exchange rate

1500 pesos is about 50 US at the current exchange rate

50 for a really nice GFE is hard to beat...

And for the monger that sent his Western Union Chica $2,000 US greenbacks

Yesterday...Saturday...on downtown streets of Santiago. I got the feeling from talking to the guy that the dollar is heading back up. May be 35 again sometime next week.

That would be perfect.

If the peso would hit 40 by the time I arrived on the 23rd...

Oh what a lovely tea party (Jay and Silent Bob strike back quote)

I just got back yesterday from Sosua and the peso went nuts during my 5 days there. It started out as 33-1 on Wednesday, went down to 27/28-1 within a day and went back up yesterday to 32-1.

I bumped into Mav on the plane yesterday and he said it went from 37-1 - 28-1 in the week he was there. I was also speaking with Diego at the Europa about this and he said he heard it will go up again but not much.

What is pretty interesting is that even though the peso is going down, all of the prices for EVERYTHING in the stores/bars/restaurants are going up regardless. An example - a pequena at the Domino Bar is now 60 pesos, cigarettes at Super Super have gone from 299 pesos to 389 pesos, a bottle of Bailey's at Super Super was 560 + pesos when the peso was at 28-1, a pizza at Isla Bonita has gone from around 175 pesos to 225+ depending what you want on it. It does not end there. It is happening all over town. They all are definitely trying to get while the getting is good. I guess they are trying to make as much as they can as quickly as they can.

Still beats being home in my book....just bring a few extra bucks and you will be good to go.

Tobacco & Alcohol taxes suck!

A 20-pack of Marlboro cigarettes that previously cost RD$284.92 was increased to RD$368.50 to reflect the increase in taxes following the implementation of the new tax reform.
Similarly, a 22-oz bottle of Presidente beer will now cost RD$50, while a 12-oz bottle sells for RD$30, representing increases of 22% and 20% over previous prices.

[b]Dominican Republic Banking and Exchange Rates:

Due to the previous devaluation of the Peso vs. the US Dollar (which has now gone the other way) many Dominicans have converted their currency holdings to US Dollars. As such, the local banking system is flush with US Dollars and the result has been a decline in US Dollar interest rates as a result. Most banks are currently offering anywhere from 2 to 4 percent on US Dollar savings accounts and up to 5 or 6 percent on time deposits. However, time deposits at local banks in Pesos will offer up to 20 percent. In addition, the current exchange rate is about 28 Pesos to one US Dollar, down from the previous high of 52 Pesos to the Dollar. What is going on? The current government is attempting to contract the money supply with three main goals in mind. One is to curb and possibly reverse the inflation that existed under the previous administration, the second is to encourage more investment and third, to silence the outcry for adopting the US Dollar instead of the local currency as a medium of principle exchange. On the last point, indeed, many businesses have stopped indicating prices in Dollars and have gone back to Pesos as a result. All positive moves to stop the erosion of the national currency and to maintain control over the Central Bank and ability to influence economic policy. Once a country accepts the US Dollar as its legal tender, or allows for a scenario whereby the Central Bank becomes nothing more than a puppet instrument for another foreign government, then such a country has just lost is sovereignty. It would seem to me that this is something the current administration seemingly does not want to accept or see happen, and a admirable point to be sure.

Mmilone - That is a very well reasoned explanation of the current trend in the Peso. At least it explains it. If you came up with yourself - kudos to you. If you didn't - kudos to you anyway for making us think.

All I hope for is that rate goes back up somewhat before I land in TWO DAYS!

I SMELL SOMETHING

Don't forget one thing, Leonel is just as bad of a criminal, perhaps a smarter one than Hipo. The wealthy "insiders" make a bloody ass fortune on these volatile swings of the peso in both directions. Prices of consumer goods take time to adjust to currency fluctuations.....months.

Read between the lines, someone purchased large amount of $US Dollars at $RD 28 -30 and now we magically are back to $35! These fast volatile moves of The $RD/$USD Fx Rate hurt both locals who are now forced to pay $RD50 Peso prices for locally priced goods and services, and the Tourist gets bent over as well losing out on exchange rates.....while paying inflated prices!

Who benefits? The Administration and the 5 or 6 SUPER Wealthy Families.

Every time I gave a chica US greenbacks when we were leaving the Europa they just changed the money into pesos.

I was in BC 9/27-10/4 and saw the RD drop from 34 to 27 and climb back to 33 in 7 days. I think you are going to see this rollercoaster ride for while as the new Government gets established, and deals with the lingering problems from the last regime.

The good news, every chica I was with was cheaper , (most by far) than my last trip. It IS down season now ,so maybe that skewed things, but I got no complaints. I came back with more more money than ever before.
