The Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) is handling five abrogation recourses filed by individuals and organizations against a ruling by the Superior Court of Lands, regarding the ownership rights of lands within the Bahia de las Aguilas reserve. There is also a case pending ruling in the Criminal Chamber of the National District Court of Appeals. Thousands of square meters of land that was expropriated in the protected area are affected by these legal proceedings. Diario Libre reports that these legal cases are another major obstacle to investment in the area for the time being. French investors backed by the Ministry of Tourism sought the government to award them the land so that they could seek financing for the construction of hotels in the protected area.
