The European Union (EU) will support development in the DR by donating EUR91 million to the fight against poverty and strengthening the health and education sectors. The EU will also donate EUR25 million which will help in the decentralization and reform of the Dominican state. EU economic advisor Jean Marc Ruiz said that eventually the EU will create a specific budget that will directly help governmental reforms. Ruiz says that the EU is committed to increasing public spending in areas of extreme importance like education, poverty and health. Ruiz explained that the EU is moving away from planned development programs like PARME (the EU program for reform and modernization of the state) and are moving towards more direct aid and support programs. The EU funds will also help support the National Statistical Office (ONE). Ruiz made his comments during the Institutional Program for Regional Integration (ISPRI) ceremony. The ISPRI has received EUR6 million that will be used to help the DR transition into the recently signed EPA agreement between the EU and CARIFORUM.
