Three fresh water turtles have been found in the lagoon at the corner of Santo Domingo's Nunez de Caceres and Gustavo Mejia Ricart avenues. Workers from the Santo Domingo Aqueduct Corporation (CAASD), found the Testudine reptiles as they worked to drain the lagoon, long an eyesore in Santo Domingo. Local rumors have it that when the lagoon that was created by discharges from runoff as well as some sewage was just a small pond, there were turtles and fish and other aquatic wildlife. The current work will create a park-like atmosphere in the area and provide for the removal of rainwater that created the eyesore in the first place. According to Nelson Nunez, the CAASD has built seven new drains and will build seven more to complement the 12 already in place. The recent rains have proved that the system works. Nunez said that the turtles will be returned to their natural habitat, but in a section with clean waters so that they can be one of the small park's attractions
