According to the United States Embassy Political Advisor Bainbridge Cowell, the case of the displacement of electors at voting stations in Pedernales and other provinces was caused by a technical problem, and not with a specific purpose or politically motivated, as reported today by Diario Libre. Cowell stated that the preparation of a small roster or a listing of electors that were erroneously misplaced to be kept at the original voting stations, could help to resolve this problem. The diplomat was speaking in Santiago where he met with candidates from several political parties. According to Cowell, the electoral process has been normal up to now. He stated that the DR has several years of experience in the performance of well-organized and transparent elections. The US Embassy is cooperating with the Organization of American States (OAS) by providing several diplomats as volunteer observers at different locations in the country, said Cowell, who added that Dominicans should go to vote and reduce abstention, as "democracy depends on an active and responsible electorate".
