In his page two editorial, Diario Libre editor Adriano Miguel Tejada comments on the distorted state of affairs of Dominican politics. "Dominican politics involve mobilization. Followers are mobilized with emotional slogans, without any call to principles or values. There was a time when both the PRD and the PLD aligned themselves with valid ideas - national liberalization, democratic socialism, and freedom for the people. But, for reasons that would take many more words to explain, they let themselves be seduced by handouts and mobilizations. The PRSC, in its early days, was never a mobilization type of party, because Balaguer used to say that his support came from the silent masses, that amorphous group that was apolitical and would support the candidates of the system in the polls.

"Now, what will happen in Dominicans politics when the masses refuse to be mobilized? The parties are already feeling the inertia of the masses, they do not find support if it is not paid supporters. The candidates are screaming about the high cost of the campaigns and there are not enough jobs for all.

If Dominican politicians do not reinvent themselves and decide to do politics in a different way, the system as we know it today has no future. What we need here is not a strong man, what we need is a new way of doing politics and of exercising power."
