The National Drug Department (DNCD) announced the arrest of Colombian Amilkar Barros Gomez in Los Mina section of Santo Domingo province. Barros Gomez was being sought by a court in Florida for a shipment of five tons of cocaine to the US, considered one of the largest shipments ever seized. A note from the DNCD indicates that Barros Gomez is also linked with a shipment of 2.4 tons of cocaine that was intercepted 150 miles from Aruba, product of an operation coordinated by the Dominican DNCD, the Royal Dutch Navy and the US Drug Enforcement Agency. That operation took place last August and was described by the US authorities as the fifth largest in the history of international drug trafficking. The DNCD said that the ship Paola, in which the confiscated drug was transported from the DR, was prepared at the Felix Benitez dock on Santo Domingo's Ozama River, arriving in Venezuela as the ship Sea Atlantic. The ship left for the Venezuelan province of La Guajira where it was intercepted in international waters by the Royal Dutch Navy. Barros Gomez was placed in the custody of DEA agents and extradited.
