The Ecological Society of the Cibao (SOECI) has launched the Model Center for Clean Energy Production in Las Manaclas, Santiago. The program will provide clean, uninterrupted energy to the small community, and each family will pay RD$150 per month. This is the first of five communities that will be taking part in the program, the others being Ranchito, Piche, La Guazumita and Los Pomos. The Ministry of the Environment issued a press release pointing out that the investment was just RD$7.5 million in construction costs. The center will provide the Agro-Ecological Farming School with energy. The initial project has a ten-year program to promote and train environmental farming to residents of the area. The project uses wind, water and sun for power generation.
