[DR1] Gasoline sales down 40% over two years

The sale of regular gasoline has fallen by 40% over the past two years as price increases have driven some motorists to use less fuel and others to install propane gas systems for their cars. Propane (LPG) sales have risen by 24% over the same period. These statistics were provided by the retail gasoline association, ANADEGAS, and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. ANADEGAS said that the reduction in regular gasoline sales is directly attributable to the increase in price of the fuel that has seen a steady increase since August 2004. Current prices for a gallon of regular are at the equivalent of US$3.92 per gallon. Crude oil prices have more than doubled over the same time frame. Sources close to the situation have told DR1 that every time that there is a significant rise in the price of gasoline, more and more people turn to propane as a solution for their fuel issues. Diesel fuel sales are down by 29%. Figures from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce show that over the past year the price of regular gasoline has increased by 42.9%, premium by 33.7% and diesel by 39%.
