Today's Diario Libre estimates the worth of the 60 million square meters section of the Bahia de las Aguilas beach lands in US$900 million at US$15 the square meter. "No wonder these lands are so in demand," reported the newspaper in its Monday issue. The Ministry of Tourism has backed a little-known French group, Argos that requested a concession on the land in order to seek financing to build eco-lodges in the protected area. Environmentalists and the Ministry of Environment advocate for hotel construction to take place in the vast beach land available outside the Bahia de las Aguilas protected area, a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
Technical Secretary of the Presidency Temistocles Montas recently announced that the government is considering holding a tender to study options for the touristic development of Pedernales and Bahia de las Aguilas.
