The legislation that aims to grant complete autonomy to the Internal Revenue and Customs departments has come under fire in the Dominican Senate. The Senate commission that is studying the legislation says that as the legislation is written, it will give the director general of Customs powers above and beyond the Dominican Constitution, since the director would be allowed to seize and sell property and real estate belonging to the state. The Senate commission has decided to consult experts and advisors on this issue and meet again later this week. According to Hoy, Senator Pedro Alegria (PRD-San Jose de Ocoa), a commission member, said that the commission would attempt to obtain a broad based consensus on the bill. Alegria reminded the reporters that Article 55, paragraph 10 of the Constitution of the Dominican Republic stipulates that the sale of any article or property belonging to the state with a value of more than RD$20,000, must be approved by Congress.
