CHICAGO - A look at local bookstores reveals much more than just novels lining the shelves. They show romance novels are getting more erotic than ever.
Publishers say the phenomenon isn?t new. It?s simply growing over the past year, according to CBS News this week.
Romance novels that hinted at eroticism are now getting spicier and are no longer called romantic, but erotic say their authors who are ratcheting up the heat with sex scenes that would make some readers blush.
With titles such as ?Deep Dark and Dangerous,? ?Sexy Beast,? and ?Hard Stuff,? today?s staid romance novels are getting an erotic makeover with nasty, hardcore sex, some writers say.
Penny Dawn, a suburban Chicago mother of two, is behind some of these latest titles and she?s bashful about admitting it.
?Women demand more than just the cheap thrill. They need the whole package,? she said.
Robin Schone, who wrote the best-selling ?The Lover,? and ?Gabrielle?s Woman,? said the relationships between the characters and how they interact ? even through sex ? are at the heart of these novels.
?If you have a murder-thriller, for example, you?re going to have blood and shock. I thought, if I'm going to include sex, do it like it is. Don?t pull any punches.?
Nick Smith, a spokesman at Barnes & Noble, said romance novels may be sexier than ever, but they are meeting a demand.
?Romance is getting a younger and younger audience and they are looking for stories that pushes the edge a little bit. That pushes the boundaries,? he said.
But not all are pleased with this new trend. Schone said she heard from one woman?s husband who complained about her book ?Awaken My Love.?
?He said it was the filthiest thing he?d ever seen in his life.?
