Bon Ice Cream is spearheading a 10-year program that seeks for the DR to secure 10% of the world market share of macadamia nuts. The company presently uses the nut to manufacture Bon macadamia ice cream flavors, cookies and crackers. The plan fosters the planting of 12,000 trees in a pilot project that began 20 years ago in remote areas of the country. Jesus Moreno, president of the group, says the plan will also serve to reforest the areas of Bahoruco and environs, contributing to environmental improvement and employment for farmers in the area. The plan calls for the future planting of 100,000 trees of macadamia nuts. The pilot program began in Los Montones, in San Jose de las Matas, and is now moving on to Polo, in Barahona, and Manabao in Constanza as farmers are convinced of the benefits of caring for the trees.
