The excavation of 500 meters of tunnel for the Santo Domingo metro system was completed yesterday, according to the Director of the Office for the Reorganization of Transport (OPRET) Diandino Pena. According to a report in Listin Diario, the stretch, which links the stations on John F. Kennedy and 27 de Febrero Avenues (both in the Olympic Center) took a record 20 days to complete. The tunnel is 8 meters wide and 3.5 meters tall and was dug with an MK3 machine imported from the UK. Excavations will now for an estimated two months time south towards the heavily built National Theater station area (600 meter tunnel). Traffic would be affected at this stretch with only two lanes of the four left for vehicles. The next phase would be further south down to the Ministry of Education station, where caves are expected to be encountered underground. Pena told reporters that the cost of construction has been kept in the US$40-US$50 million per kilometer range.
