Political party leaders, headed by President Leonel Fernandez, signed a "Pact of Civility for a Peaceful Electoral Campaign" at PUCMM yesterday, in the presence of Archbishop Ramon Benito de la Rosa y Carpio, president of the Dominican Conference of Bishops; all Central Electoral Board (JCE) judges, diplomatic corps members, international observers, civil society representatives, business associations and evangelical churches. According to the document, the political leadership agreed to remove publicity that could be considered negative by their competitors with immediate effect, and ensure the ethical use of public resources so they are not applied in campaign activities, as reported by Listin Diario. They also agreed to form an Electoral Assistance Commission coordinated by Msgr. Agripino Nunez Collado and composed by Rafael Perello, Celso Marranzini, Felix Garcia, Jose Joaquin Puello, Marisol Vicens, Reynaldo Franco Aquino, Porfirio Garcia and Radhames Mejia. The signatories are committed to refraining from interference with other parties' campaign activities and to respecting integrity within political organizations. They will also instruct their followers to refrain from using violence, alcohol, firearms in political caravans and meetings, and to promote debate centered on policy analysis with an emphasis on economic, social and political issues and a future legislative agenda that includes constitutional reform. The agreement was proposed by Msgr. Nunez Collado.
